The Fungus That Mind Controls Insects

I am very passionate when it comes to learning about the complexity of reality and the incredible ways in which it is designed. I was busy reading the book Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake which is all about fungi and the deeply fundamental role they play in the world around us. It is fascinating to learn about systems that are so unknown, yet so important to keeping nature and life moving forward.

One crazy thing which I felt compelled to share, is the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis which is a fungus that essentially fulfills its own purpose by “wearing” an insect body. Once a spore lands on an insect, it takes over its body and puppeteers it to climb a specific tree and bite into certain types of leaves, after which the fungus grows out and kills the insect, allowing more of its spores to now spread. How fucking crazy is that!

What blew my mind was just how intricate nature really is, as well as how much nuance exists within systems that are so microscopic. It reminds me how profound reality truly is.

Nature is both inspiring and brutal all at the same time.
